Victorian Department of Health

Bridging the gap in women’s healthcare

A multi-service ecosystem connected by one cohesive brand system

A brand that would stand up, demanding to be seen and heard

Designed by women, for women

Despite making up more than half the population, women's health has been overlooked, underdiagnosed and fragmented for far too long. To bridge the gap in women's healthcare the Department of Health is delivering a $153.9 million commitment over 4 years: 20 new Women's Health Clinics, 20 Sexual and Reproductive Health Hubs, mobile and virtual services, and an Aboriginal-led clinic. Our brief was to build one cohesive brand system to stretch across a multi-service ecosystem, and be easily identifiable within hospital and community health centre environments.

Often healthcare brands default to soft and reassuring, but this initiative seeks to correct a systemic injustice. Women had been waiting long enough. The brand needed to stand up and be heard — visible, distinct, proud and unmistakably women-centred.

At the heart of the identity sits an iconic, womanly w — a mark that doubles as a quiet nod to quotation marks, giving voice to women's stories. Authentic portraits celebrating women of all ages and walks of life let women know these services are designed with them in mind. Working within Brand Victoria guidelines, we built a colour palette that holds its own in isolation and in harmony — performing equally across signage, campaigns, digital healthcare environments, and formal health reports. The system stretched across the program brand, Women's Health Clinics, Sexual and Reproductive Health Hubs, and the Inquiry into Women's Pain report.

Launched alongside the Inquiry into Women's Pain, the program is well underway with 15 clinics now open across Victoria, and most other services in operation. The w mark now navigates women through all of these services, providing the reassurance these services exist solely for them.
